that looks like a sole ready to exfoliate to me... which will = need for a trim!
It means the sole is sloughing off, right?
Exfoliate, yes! Slough, nooooo! When a sole sloughs off it is NOT a good thing. When it exfoliates by itself, it is!
I never heard of a sole exfoliating until I was reading your blog... but Don's hooves look EXACTLY like that from time to time! Only in true thoroughbred fashion he has lovely chips in the wall. Luckily he doesn't chip too terribly. For a thoroughbred.
