On a much lighter and brighter note than the few previous posts have been on... anyone remember the scraggly little hairball that I pulled out of a ditch in a rainstorm in January? She was on her last legs when I found her... I don't think she would have survived the night had I not found her. She had a festering wound on her tail and was skin and bones. There was no way I could have left her there in the freezing rain. I took her home, had her doctored up, and named her Mimi.
Fast forward to August....
Doesn't even remotely look like the same cat does it? She even changed colors! She is fat and sleek, and her hair feels like silk. She always climbs in bed with me when I sleep, and had the most adorable nearly-silent little mew when she wants food (which is always).
As some of you guys know, I have a complete menagerie of pets aside from Gogo. I am a sucker for a critter in need, which is how I ended up with a Greyhound (rescued from the track), a Doberman/Rottweiler (on a chain in somebody's backyard), and a Corgi (running loose on the highway with no owner to be found). They are ridiculously amusing and all wonderful companions. They also all have a set of tricks that I've taught them, as follows:
Ti (Greyhound): Lay down, sit, sit pretty, up, dance, turn around, shake (standing and sitting, with both paws), crawl, bow
Tonka (Dobe/Rott): Sit, shake (both paws), lay down, play dead, turn around
Twiggy (Corgi): Sit, shake, dance, speak, roll over
I should teach them more tricks, I like teaching dogs useless and funny tricks.
Anyway, here's a video of the three of them going completely nuts over cookie time and (sort of) doing some of their tricks. Mostly it's just them crashing into each other and trying to steal everybody else's cookies. Oh I love them so.
We'll soon return to regular scheduled Gogo time.... but this week has been totally nutty! That incredibly gorgeous Dobe I mentioned in my last post turned out to be violently aggressive towards other dogs, cats, and horses (but adorable to people!) so he unfortunately will not be a permanent addition to this little family. I LOVE the breed and desperately crave one, but he was not the right dog. He is going to make an AWESOME solo pet for someone who can offer that to him. That whole ordeal has taken up a large part of my past several days! I also agreed a few weeks ago to take on another kitty from a family who needed to rehome him, and he is finally here. He is doing all right, getting a little better every day - he had never seen another kitty up close before he got to my house so my big fat hairball was a shock to him. On top of all of that, the other day I was driving home from work in a rainstorm when I spotted something creamy-colored laying in the ditch on the side of the road. I stopped, hopped out of my car, and saw it was a very skinny, very tiny, and very soaked Balinese (or Siamese mix, possibly) who was crawling away under the wire fence. When she saw me, she turned right around, and came over to crawl into my lap. She was rail thin and shivering, and had an open and reeking wound on her tail. I put her in my coat and took her back to my house, her kneading and purring the entire time. One trip to the vet later, and she has a totally clean bill of health and a lanced abscess on her tail (ewww). Amazingly, she's parasite-free and FEL-negative, and knows how to use a litterbox. I think she was probably dumped and was laying there in the ditch in a rainstorm slowly starving to death. She was very dehydrated and SO hungry when I found her. She is still eating loads and has an incredibly large foodbelly now! The vet did not think she was pregnant, but I dunno man.... that is one heck of a hard, round belly she has going! It's huge! And she's parasite free so it can't be that!
I've been calling her Mimi because that is the only name that has popped into my head that actually suits her personality. She is the most seriously outgoing kitty I've ever met - she has NO fear. She loves my dog, loves the other cats, and love to EAT! She loves to be picked up, snuggled, cuddled, and lets you touch her all over the place - she loves a good belly rub. Jasper (the other new guy) loves to sneak around and pop out once in awhile but he's still pretty antisocial at this point... I think he is feeling like the odd man out in a house full of girls!
I plan on writing more about all the kids soon enough.... if and when I ever have a moment! I was asked about my greyhound too... I always have lots to say about her!
Gogo is a 10-year-old dark bay Holsteiner mare who I purchased as a 5-year-old in PA in July of 2006. She came from a fantastic woman with a trainer I instantly disliked, and was just barely started, headstrong, and certainly promising. Her steering was not all there, and the trainer had her head cranked to her chest the entire ride. She also was shod in front with shoes and pads; after having repeated bad farrier jobs cripple my last horse, I was ready to give performance barefooting a try. She tossed both her shoes within a week of me owning her, and that was the last time she ever wore them. More setbacks in her training occured when I left her in the care of a trainer I trusted while I was studying abroad in New Zealand from January to June of 2007 - I came home to find her starved, beaten, and with a rearing problem. Lots and lots of time and hard work, and she's come a long way....
This blog follows her training, her travels, and also her feet! People say horses can't possibly successfully jump or event barefoot at the upper levels... I'm here to prove them wrong.

Sunday Success Stories
Sunday Success Stories are a weekly feature here at Eventing-A-Gogo. Every Sunday we highlight a reader's own personal journey through overcoming adversity with their horses, sometimes against all odds. These stories are about those who never gave up, and who made a difference in the life of an animal who just needed a little love and care in order to turn around. For as long as I can remember, my life has revolved around horses. I've been riding since the age of 7, and doing dressage and eventing since the age of 15. My first gelding was a little black Trakehner named Quincy who had had EPM at some point; he was the best friend an emotional teenager could have ever wanted. He died of a horrible colic in 2004. My second gelding was a dark bay clunker of a Trakehner named Metro; he was the best schoolmaster and friend I ever could have asked for, and he trucked my butt around my first real x-country courses, and brought me my first really fancy ribbons. Due to a whole slew of problems, we euthanized him in 2006. My third horse was the quirky and opinionated Gogo, my first youngster and my first mare. She taught me endless amounts of patience, the importance of praise and soft hands, how to graciously accept mass amounts of blue ribbons one moment and how to graciously accept a dose of humble butt-whooped pie the next. After a long and downhill rehab for compounded leg injuries, we let her go in October of 2011. What's next for me? Follow along and find out!
